Our Goal: Environmental Sustainability.

For Harper Corporation, “Going Green” means doing what’s right to protect resources and the planet for future generations. To achieve that end, we continually implement new ways to lower energy usage, cut waste, reduce packaging, conserve resources, and decrease emissions to keep the air and environment clean. Our goal is to eliminate land fill wastes and this will take some creative thinking and specific programs:

We have implemented recycling programs for office papers, magazines and newsprint, drink containers, plastic film and wrap, and we’re adding additional waste streams programs when possible.

We adopted a four-day work week to lower our employees’ commute miles by 20%, thereby contributing to improvement of our nation’s, and local air quality. In production processes, we have developed programs of responsible manufacturing to prevent pollution, save energy and reduce the use of raw materials:

•  As long as 15 years ago, Harper Corporation realized by eliminating chrome plated anilox rollers we would make a positive impact on the local environment and reduce our non sanitary water waste to zero. To achieve that goal, we quickly phased chrome plated rolls out of our product line.

•  We handle all industrial waste responsibly, and implement “best available technology”.

•  We strive to help our customers get the most reconditions from their bases and sleeves. In addition, all scrapped rollers and sleeves are sent to metal recyclers.

•  We recapture and recycle all metal wastes from manufacturing including powder, turnings (shavings),wires and consumable parts. Finally, the products we sell to sustain anilox roll life are biodegradable, using chemistry with reduced VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) rates. We are focusing resources and research to develop new lines of cleaners that are 100% green.

Harper Corporation of America offers the world’s one and only WalkingSeminar™, a customized technical session on anilox technology where customers can get solutions to specific problems and a tour of a state-of-the-art Harper manufacturing facility. Our Advanced Surface Technologies Center is the world’s most modern and unique anilox roll engraving facilty. It features the latest technology in computerized plasma flame-spray and laser engraving equipment.

WalkingSeminars™ are offered at the following Harper manufacturing locations: Charlotte, NC and DePere, WI. You may schedule a facilities tour and technical session at any time. Participation in a Harper WalkingSeminar™ is always free of charge. Attire is casual.

Walking Seminar

Only one company is scheduled at a time:

Your organization can bring as few as 1 or 2 people, or as many as 30. When a larger group comes in, our instructors typically work with a maximum of 6 people. There may be as many as 5 groups involved simultaneously. All sessions are completely confidential.

Walking Seminar Harper

Questions and Answers:

You will be given the opportunity to view the manufacturing facilty, speak directly with production operators about their particular manufacturing function and their contributions to the “finished product” – your anilox roll.

Program ABC

Companies can design their own program agendas to address their specific concerns or choose from our three unique programs. Training takes place in our Charlotte, NC and DePere, WI facilities or our experts can be brought to your plant.

Anilox Training

Program A: Anilox Basics

This program includes basic information on flexography, anilox roll cell structure and function, the care and maintenance of anilox rolls, and our “XLT™” anilox roll technology.

Program B:Advanced Anilox Technology

This programs includes a more in-depth look at flexography and the anilox roll’s relationship to this advancing industry, the care and maintenance of anilox rolls (presented by the HarperScientific™ team), other valuable components of the Flexo system and their relationship to quality graphic reproduction (i.e., inks, doctor blade, rubber rolls, plates and substrates), and banded roll testing and analysis.

Program C: Customer’s Choice

Design your own program agenda. Topics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • XLT™ Technology
  • Anilox Roll Design
  • Sharper System™
  • Step-Up Program™
  • Roll Auditing
  • Partnership of the Customer
  • And many, many more…

Anilox Training

Possible alternate opener or one that defines the team:

Implementing The SHarper System™ in your facility will help you achieve and maintain the Flexographic Image Reproduction Specifications and Tolerances (FIRST).* The GraphicSolutions Team will teach you “by the numbers” systems to help you track your results with support every step of the way.

Benefits of The SHarper System™

  • More consistent flexo printing, press to press and plant to plant.
  • Higher quality flexo results that compete with gravure and litho.
  • A consistent method of communication and control to assist buyers in orders and specifications.
  • Finely-tuned production capabilities that open new markets.

Implementing XLT

Using thinner ink films at ratios of higher cells per inch results in sharper graphics and better tone distribution. Additional benefits include cleaner vignettes and the ability to print solids and tones on the same plates. To determine which choice of anilox engraving will produce your best print density, print contrast, and dot gain, we recommend conducting a Banded Roll Trial.

Charlotte, N.C., January 15, 2008 – HarperScientific™, the printing and coating supplies division of global anilox supplier Harper Corporation of America, announces the introduction of AltraWash Blue™, an environmentally friendly, multi-purpose cleaner for UV and solvent-based inks which is absolutely safe for use on aluminum.

The sister product to AltraWash Green™, the non-corrosive cleaner designed for water-based inks, AltraWash Blue is a new, concentrated cleaner specifically formulated for cleaning UV and solvent-based inks in pressure washing systems, soak tanks and ultrasonic tanks, or it can be used simply as an on-press anilox cleaner. It is also useful for cleaning printing plates.

“The fact that AltraWash Blue is perfectly safe for aluminum is particularly exciting,” explained Tony Donato, Product Development Engineer at Harper Corporation of America. “Because aluminum is used in the construction of most wide-web and narrow-web anilox sleeves as well as lightweight anilox rolls, a non-corrosive cleaner with a safe pH level is critical for protecting anilox investments.”

AltraWash Blue has a pH of 11.8. The new cleaner’s advanced surfactant technology is also exceedingly environmentally friendly, using no petroleum distillates or environmentally hazardous chemicals. It is a biodegradable, low-V.O.C. product, and has low vapor pressure.

Available exclusively through HarperScientific (www.HarperScientific.com), this concentrated formula, which can be diluted with water, is sold in 1 gallon, 5 gallon, 30 gallon and 55 gallon containers.

HarperScientific is the manufacturer of CeramClean II™ and CeramClean SOLV-IT™ anilox cleaners, and a variety of bladed, laser-engraved hand-proofing systems including the Phantom™ line of hand proofers used to color-match flexographic and gravure inks.

Charlotte, NC, September 9, 2010 – A motorized version of the patent pending Phantom QD™ proofing system developed by HarperScientific, division of global anilox supplier Harper Corporation will make its debut at Harper Booth 401 during LabelExpo.

The new Phantom QD™ Motorized unit is the latest addition to Harper’s breakthrough family of quick drawndown proofers – the first in the industry with complete portability and utility-free operation.

Tony Donato, Harper Product Development Engineer, said the motorized Phantom QD™ unit features a variable speed from 100 to 400 inches per minute and 110-volt power capability. Harper is offering the motorized option on its 800mm table length Phantom QD™.

All Harper QD systems maintain a constant loading pressure between the proofer and the substrate, according to Donato. By adding a motor to drive the proofer over the table length, Harper now has successfully eliminated another process variable.

“This advanced option represents Harper’s intention to make the Phantom QD™ proofing system the most versatile tool in the ink room,” Donato said. All models provide a linearly guided table, a magnetic-loaded doctor blade, quick-change anilox roller and superior repeatability.

Phantom models are available in a traditional format for water-based and solvent inks where rollers are engraved at a 60-degree hex angle and in a viscous format that is ideal for thick and metallic inks where rollers are engraved at a 30-degree hex angle.
