Charlotte, North Carolina, February 15, 2016—Global anilox roll supplier Harper Corporation of America will once again be an exhibitor at the 2016 Gravure Global Summit. This year’s theme is “Focused on Strategic Growth and Value” and will feature presentations from leaders in the industry regarding innovation, technology, and strategic operations to drive business.   

Representatives from Harper Corporation of America will attend and participate in the table top Global Marketplace. On display will be many ground-breaking offerings, including the QD™ flat bed ink proofer and multi process printer. This system provides both direct and offset gravure printing capabilities and utilizes Harper’s XDI™imaging engraving, allowing it to engrave almost anything that can be imaged in a TIF file. All of Harper’s cylinders are ceramic coated and laser engraved to the same quality standard that makes Harper the leading anilox supplier. 

They will also showcase the HIVE engravings, which excel in coatings and laminations via ceramic gravure cylinders that are long-lasting and wear-resistant to abrasive inks. HarperScientific Promotes Environmentally-Friendly Packaging of CeramClean

Charlotte, North Carolina, January 10, 2012—HarperScientific, a division of global anilox roll supplier Harper Corporation, has recently made CeramClean II available in a more environmentally-friendly one gallon tub.

CeramClean II is an anilox roll cleaner designed to remove water-based, solvent, and UV inks. Additionally, the cleaner can remove stains and target specific contaminants that machine cleaners leave behind. Safe for gravure and chrome cylinders, CeramClean II is available in three formulas: original, paste, and pourable.

To date, CeramClean II has been offered in two packs, eight packs, five gallon containers, and drums. The addition of a one gallon tub option will allow HarperScientific's green-minded customers to purchase the same amount of cleaner as provided by the eight pack, with less packaging. The new one gallon option reduces the packaging materials and decreases the overall weight of the product by 10 percent.

Customers who purchase the one gallon tub, rather than the eight pack, will enjoy a reduction in shipping weight and disposal displacement (due to the fact that the product is contained in one package, rather than eight). As such, the company is excited to welcome Greg Horney as Technical Service Representative for the Central Plains and Southwest regions.

Greg brings with him more than 30 years of experience in Flexographic and Offset printing.  He holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Arts and Sciences from Rochester Institute of Technology, as well as his Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and FIRSTImplementation Specialist Level III Certification. Greg has worked his way up through the printing industry starting off on the press room floor running errands and eventually became a press operator.  Greg continued his cycle of success by being promoted to Graphics and Prepress, Quality, Continuous Improvement/Project Management, Print Management, and Production Management.

His commitment to the industry has led him to serve as chair and co-chair for sessions at the 2017 FTA Forum/InfoFlex and to speak as part of a panel at the 2016 FTA Fall Conference in Louisville, Kentucky.  In addition, Greg has been a judge for the FTA three times and has published articles in FLEXO Magazine.

Flexo Trade School And Harper Scholarship Join Forces With Jacob’s Ladder

Charlotte, N.C., May 13, 2008 – Ron and Katherine Harper recently passed along a warm message of congratulations to the Flexographic Trade School's current Harper scholars: "Please tell Lamar Carothers and Linwood Armstrong, Jr. that we wish them every success as they pursue new careers in the wonderful world of flexography."

Carothers and Armstrong came to the Flexographic Trade School (FTS) in Fort Mill, S.C. through Jacob's Ladder Job Center, Inc., a community-based non-profit agency dedicated to helping the unemployed and underemployed to find and keep living wage jobs (www.jacobsladdercharlotte.org , 704.332.5822). Their enrollment in the school is made possible through a scholarship program created by Ron and Katherine Harper. Jacob's Ladder is based in nearby Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Harper said, "The industry has been so good to Katherine and me over the past 37 years, and Lamar and Linwood can expect the same if they are willing to 'go the extra mile' every day in their pursuit of excellence. They are already off to a great start, having enrolled in the Flexographic Trade School, where they are receiving outstanding flexo training."

The students have reached the half-way point in FTS's three-month Flexo Press Operator Training program, and both have begun meeting with potential employers through the school's placement service.

Upon their graduation from FTS, Carothers' and Armstrong's photos will hang on a wall in the school's conference room dedicated to Harper Scholarship recipients.

Alexander James Promoted to Director of Harper GraphicSolutions

Charlotte, North Carolina, January 24, 2012—Global anilox roll supplier Harper Corporation is happy to announce that Alexander James has been promoted to the position of Director of Harper GraphicSolutions.

The promotion, which was effective January 1, 2012, makes James responsible for the strategic and technical direction of the Harper GraphicSolutions division. He will also communicate directly with key accounts.

James has been a part of the Harper family for over eight years and has worked in the graphics communication industry for over twenty years. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville, James also has a master's degree from Clemson University's Graphic Communications program.

President Kluttz has done just that and was chosen by the faculty to receive this award, which was previously known as the Clemson Graphic Arts Society Award (CGAS). It was later renamed the Clemson/Treadaway Commitment to Progress Award in honor of Mr. Bill Treadaway, the first recipient of the award.

Harper Corporation of America Presents at NPIRI Summer Course

 Charlotte, North Carolina, July 24, 2018—Global anilox roll supplier Harper Corporation of America maintains an active presence in the flexographic industry when it comes to educating and training current and future printing professionals. Tony Donato, Product Development Engineer at Harper, recently presented at an NPIRI Summer Course held at The Sonoco Institute at Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina from July 15-20, 2018.    

The course brought together around 50 attendees who work as ink formulators and ink development professionals and were interested in learning the press processes and elements that interact with ink. The course covered the full spectrum of flexo and gravure printing, lamination, and converting processes including observation of flexo and digital press runs, flexo plate making and mounting, substrates for surface and reverse printing and lamination, proofing and printability demonstrations, and anilox discussion and application.

Donato led the anilox discussion and application portion covering the purpose of anilox, what is necessary for anilox printing, and how to choose the appropriate anilox. He provided insight into the basics of the mechanical dimensional requirements including roundness, taper and T.I.R., cell count (CPI) and volume (BCM), as well as the ratios of anilox cells to plate dots. Furthermore, attendees learned about the ratio between pigment size and cell opening for pearlescents and metallics.

A major focus of discussion was also explaining why BCM controls color and why cell count is tied to the plate screen. Donato also emphasized the importance of proper anilox handling, cleaning, and storage.

Donato was thrilled to be a part of this course for the National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers and have the opportunity to interact and engage with so many attendees regarding the role of anilox in the printing process.

Malm, a longtime veteran of the packaging industry, comes to Harper with comprehensive flexo experience and specific expertise in groups process improvement as well as global plant standardization.

Harper Corporation of America Raises Funds for Flexographic Education

Charlotte, North Carolina, September 2, 2013—Global anilox roll supplier Harper Corporation of America is a strong supporter of education, sponsoring and participating in numerous initiatives to raise funds for programs, scholarships, and other causes. The company recently held its ninth annual Midwest Converters Golf Outing to raise funds for the Phoenix Challenge Foundation.

Co-founded by employees of Harper Corporation and All Printing Resources in 2004, this event has continued to grow throughout the years, allowing professionals to network on a national level while raising funds to support flexographic education. This year's outing was sponsored by 21 co-suppliers, including ink companies, press OEMs, plate suppliers, and print sleeve suppliers, that sponsored 29 different teams that participated in the day-long competition comprising 18 holes of golf, dinner, and a raffle. The event was held at Royal St. Patrick’s Golf Course in Wrightstown, Wisconsin. 

This year’s event included a three-par betting hole where $500 was raised to support the Phoenix Challenge Foundation. This organization provides educational programs geared toward student placement in the flexographic printing industry. Through these programs students are able to gain a better understanding of the industry and how they can get involved in supporting its future.
