Charlotte, NC, November 22, 2010– Veteran graphics experts from the Harper GraphicSolutions™ division of global anilox supplier Harper Corporation participated in the recent Fall Technical Conference of the Association of Industrial Metalilizers, Coaters and Laminators (AIMCAL).
The four-day event, held this year in Myrtle Beach, SC, offered attendees a comprehensive lineup of technical presentations addressing concerns of those in the web coating and vacuum web coating industry. Visitors perused tabletop product displays and took advantage of evening receptions offering business networking opportunities.
In his presentation, Mike Huey, Technical Graphics Manager for the Western Division of Harper GraphicSolutions™, outlined advances in liquid coatings. Key to better coating functionality and economics, he said, are improved measuring and control of coating thickness. Huey was joined at the conference by fellow Harper graphics expert Alex James.
Huey said liquid coatings offer a myriad of functionality issues, among them reaction to microwave heat, light and moisture. “One of the key factors that controls a coatings’ ability to function is thickness of the application,” he said. “Measuring and controlling thickness is crucial for several reasons.”
Most important, he said, is ensuring the coating performs in the intended way. That requires avoiding the use of too much or too little coating. “It becomes a matter of economics,” Huey said. “Why put down four microns if three microns will give you the functionality you are searching for.” The goal: achieving true transfer efficiency based on application weight and mathematics, he told the audience.
Harper used its AIMCAL tabletop display to showcase the latest in its family of completely portable, utility-free proofing system. The new Phantom QD™ Motorized unit operates at variable speeds from 100 to 400 inches per minute with 110-volt power capability. The motorized option is available on Harper’s 800mm table length Phantom QD™.

Charlotte, N.C., September 17, 2008 – Recently, Harper GraphicSolutionsâ„¢, the technical service arm of global anilox supplier Harper Corporation of America, hosted an engaging educational seminar about anilox sleeve care for Harper customers, flexo suppliers and OEMs. More than 50 guests gathered for the presentations at the Harper National Flexographic Center on the Harper Campus of Central Piedmont Community College.
With their typical relaxed and witty repartee, the technical service professionals of Harper Corporation of America presented a full day of insight and experience, including extensive information about: ” Anilox Sleeve Construction ” Sleeves vs. Rolls – Operational Differences ” Anilox Sleeve Care & Storage ” Ordering Specifications and Inspection & Repair Services
Paul Teachout, Harper GraphicSolutions Southeast Technical Graphics Advisor; Alan Rogers, Harper Southeast Technical Account Manager; and Tony Donato, Harper Product and Process Development Engineer, all shared anecdotes about their field experiences with anilox sleeve damage and maintenance. With photos included in their presentations, the experts discussed the importance of proper handling, storage and cleaning, including specs for soda blasting and the proper settings for the FlexoWash, the importance of neutralizing after chemical cleaning, and the damage that can befall sleeves that are not cleaned and dried thoroughly. According to Donato, “Slide the sleeve off of the mandrel regularly to clean underneath on those long-mounted colors like white — when ink gets between the sleeve and the mandrel, the ink becomes like glue!”
The symposium finished with a tour of Harper Corporation’s nearby manufacturing facility, where participants observed anilox sleeves being inspected and engraved; saw an echotopography demonstration of volume measurement; and embarked on a Harper GraphicSolutions lab tour to see a HarperScientific Sleeve Wrak in action, observe audits and doctor blade analysis, and participate in a Q and A session.
At day’s end, participants completed evaluations: The results indicate that the seminar was a great success, and the group appreciated the opportunity to attend. The vast majority rated the presenters, the programs and the usefulness of the information as “excellent,” and without exception, the participants unanimously indicated that they would recommend this seminar to a colleague.

For almost 38 Years, Canflexographics has been at the forefront of innovation, education, and strategic partnerships, playing a pivotal role in advancing flexographic printing in Canada. Their commitment to excellence and continuous pursuit of innovation have made them an integral part of the industry's growth and success.

In 1993, a transformative relationship began between Mr. Dave Horsman and Mr. Ron Harper. This partnership laid the foundation for Canflexographics' commitment to quality and reliability, setting the stage for the remarkable 30-year celebration we mark today.
Kelly Roberts, Canflexo’s President, joined Canflexographics in 2001, and reflected on his initial introduction and enduring relationship with Mr. and Mrs. Harper,“Beyond business, the Harpers were keen on understanding the personal aspects of their associates, forging relationships that go beyond the corporate realm. This personal touch has been a hallmark of the Harper name, aligning seamlessly with Canflexographics' values.”
Before delving into sales, that initial conversation between Kelly Roberts and Mr. Harper centered around education and the industry's needs in 2001. The Harper name has long been synonymous with education, and Kelly's collaboration and work with Clemson University, Toronto Metropolitan University, the Canadian Flexographic Training Committee and the Canadian Print Scholarships Fund demonstrates the shared commitment to advancing education in flexography.
Flexographic printing, once the youngest of all printing processes, underwent significant changes, making it competitive in the evolving printing landscape. Despite the rise of digital printing, Canflexographics believes in the enduring strength of flexography, with consistent anilox rolls being a key attribute. Harper Corporation's expertise in matching anilox roll line screens and volumes has been a driving force in this regard.
Canflexographics acknowledges Harper Corporation's role in their success story, considering Harper as more than a supplier but a partner in growth. The enduring relationship has been characterized by mutual learning, support, and shared growth, making Harper one of Canflexographics' longest and valued partnerships.

As Kelly, Pascal Ross – Sales Manager and Christine Roberts – Vice President, look back on 30 years of achievements, the celebration with Harper is not just a reflection of their success but a testament to the enduring partnerships, shared values, and commitment to advancing the flexographic industry in Canada.
